This Present Age, inspired by a treatise written by Soren Kierkegaard, examines how Kierkegaard’s concept of abstraction plays out in the Technology Age.

Abstraction is the process of degrading and dehumanizing with a constant flow of commentary. The all-seeing, all-knowing, and all-punishing "Public" levels citizens. Humans are no longer humans. We've become one-dimensional images on a screen, worth no more than 144 characters of slander.

The solution to this dilemma, according to Kierkegaard, is to withdraw to the inner life. To him, that means a religious one. Carried to its most idealistic extreme, Kierkegaard would have us living in a monastic theocracy, one which would undoubtedly generate a new form of insanity.

That being said, there is immeasurable value in withdrawing from technology and turning toward one another and toward ourselves. Introspection and real-world community seem to be the only viable means of survival in the digital age.
